The Lunan Burn and Clunie Loch Catchment Restoration Project

29th October, 2024

The Lunan Burn Wildlife Cluster has been enhancing water quality and restoring freshwater habitats within the Lunan Burn and the Loch Clunie Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), with support from PKC's Nature Restoration Fund.

The project commenced with the exclusion of livestock access from the Lunan Burn, coupled with the provision of an alternative watering system. This crucial measure significantly reduces diffuse pollution, thereby improving water quality and benefiting aquatic ecosystems. Additionally, the planting of hedging and native trees has established linear habitat corridors that connect existing core areas of native woodland, facilitating species movement and enhancing biodiversity.

Riparian native tree planting and restoration along the banks of the Lunan Burn and Loch Clunie further bolster the existing native woodland resources. These efforts not only protect vital habitats but also improve the overall ecological health of the protected site, contributing to the development of nature networks in the region.
