New tree nursery in Pitlochry

23rd April, 2025

Tayside Woodland Partnership have established a new tree nursery through help from the PKC Nature Restoration Fund.

Establishing a New Tree Nursery

The project has enabled the construction of a dedicated shed for tools and equipment, along with a log cabin to be used as both a potting shed and meeting space. This new infrastructure supports the growth of trees from seed and locally sourced saplings.

Carefully managed by members of the Tayside Woodland Partnership (TWP), and with active input from volunteers, the trees will be nurtured on site for two to three years before being distributed to support community tree planting across Pitlochry and the wider Tayside area.

Supporting Local Habitat Restoration

As the nursery becomes established, it will directly support habitat enhancement efforts in places like Black Spout Woods. Community involvement is a core part of the project, with plans to engage residents as well as local school children and scout groups in planting and caring for young trees.

The nursery will act as a local hub for learning practical skills in propagation, tree care, and woodland management-fostering a lasting connection between people and nature.

Building Biodiversity and Resilience

By supplying native trees for restoration planting, the project will help improve woodland habitat connectivity, encouraging greater biodiversity and strengthening ecosystem resilience. As the trees take root in both rural and urban spaces, they will contribute to climate adaptation, carbon capture, and the long-term health of local woodlands.
