Kettins Biodiversity Conservation Project

29th October, 2024

Through the Nature Restoration Fund, Perth and Kinross Council funded Kettins Biodiversity Conservation Project, by Kettins Parish Community Council.

The project focused on transforming sections of greenspace into vibrant ecosystems. Plans included planting native fruit and nut-bearing trees that were pollinator-friendly, providing crucial habitats for local wildlife. This effort not only enriched the area’s biodiversity but also acted as a stepping stone for wildlife movement between various habitats.

One particularly promising aspect of the project addressed a historically flooded area where the local burn was diverted. By introducing moisture-tolerant bulbs and plugs, the initiative aimed to create a thriving wetland habitat, to support a variety of species.

The meadows and fruit tree areas will provide ideal habitat, shade and shelter for a range of invertebrate species including butterflies, moths and solitary bees. Additionally, existing bat and migratory bird populations use the area for feeding on abundant insects in summer.

Kettins Parish Community Council hope the fruit and nut trees will provide an early source of pollen for insects, as well as a source of forage for local birds and mammals. The fruit will also provide sustainable, healthy food options at a time of climate uncertainty.

If you find yourself in or around Kettins, why not stop by to enjoy the tranquillity of our newly restored habitats? Take a moment to breathe in the fresh air and listen to sounds of bird song.
