Birds, Bees, Bogs, and Frogs: Creating a Safe Corridor for Nature

29th October, 2024

PKAVS has been creating new habitats at the Walled Garden in Perth, with support from PKC's Nature Restoration Fund.

The "Birds, Bees, Bogs, and Frogs" project has established vital habitats for a variety of native species. The initiative has created a large wildlife pond and a bog garden, which together provide essential shelter and resources for pollinators, birds, and insects.

The newly created pond has quickly become a thriving ecosystem, offering a home for amphibians and insects. The presence of pond skaters, great diving beetles, and frogs indicates a healthy aquatic environment, while an increase in birds and waterfowl showcases the pond’s appeal to a diverse array of wildlife.

To further bolster biodiversity, the project also focused on creating pollinator highways by sowing native wildflower seeds. These highways connect different areas of the garden, facilitating movement for pollinators and contributing to Buglife's B-Line network.

The benefits of this project to the people of Perth and Kinross are immense. It not only enhances mental health and well-being by bringing individuals closer to nature but also improves physical health, as all work is done collaboratively by the community. This sense of togetherness helps reduce isolation and loneliness, while providing opportunities for education about the diverse wildlife that visits the site and how to ensure their continued presence. Through engagement and learning, the project fosters a deeper connection between the community and the natural world.
